Long Fin Killie - Houdini
I'm listening a lot to LFK this week. When I bought Houdini I had only heard the singles 'Hollywood Gem' and 'The Heads Of Dead Surfers' and I it took me a while before I was hooked. The lyrics are very good and stuck in my head first: Houdini popped up out of the blue, she caught me on a saturday, she said - 'I'm looking for a sensitive intelligent man, but all those guys have boyfriends. So you'll have to do for now'.

Minks - Ophelia
The new Minks 7" sounds more clear than his previous 'Funeral Song', this reminds me of Felt more than The Cure. It's out on Captured Tracks and his blog is here.

Long Fin Killie - Rhino 7" + Vanilla 7"
These two limited 7" singles were released in the U.S. by Too Pure in 1995 to promote Houdini. 'Rhino' and 'Vanilla' are exclusive to this release with album tracks 'Love Smothers Allergy' and 'Homo Erectus' as b-sides. They're never released on cd but you can still buy the vinyl in this shop.

Frankie Rose And The Outs - Candy
Frankie Rose was the drummer in Vivian Girls and wrote their best song 'Where Do You Run To?'. She left for Crystal Stilts and added her skills prominently to their sound, the drums on these Crystal Stilts songs sound dark and subdued and show a deep interest in sound. Then she went to work with the Dum Dum Girls and gave that band a firm backbone with static, hard pounding drums. Now she's totally focused on her own band Frankie And The Outs. They released the single 'Thee Only One' last year on Slumberland and in september that label will release the self-titled debut album.
It's a great record with a lot of reverb, harmonies and 60's girl group influences. I think the best track is 'Candy', it really sticks in your head immediately. Download 'Little Brown Haired Girls' here, and listen to 'Candy' below.

These New Puritans - En Papier (Live)
This is a very tense early live version of 'En Papier' from Beat Pyramid. I saw them live during this period and I remember them playing this one and tracks off the Now Pluvial EP.
There's a lot of distortion on this recording and I love the agressive bass, so much energy.

Beautiful new Deerhunter single. I think the b-side is the best song here.

Blue On Blue - Summer Daze
Blue On Blue is fronted by ex-An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump's D-Bird. It's quite a departure from the sound of her previous band, the Sonic Youth noise and Kim Gordon style vocals are gone. This is much more atmospheric, dreamy and structured with a melodic bassline that sounds like New Order. But it's good though, very good.

Atlas Sound - Blog Mix
Atlas Sound's blog is full of great music he gives away for free. There are lots of EP's and virtual 7"'s there that are as interesting as his solo records. Lately he's posting his music a little less frequent then he used to, probably because he was busy with the new Deerhunter record.
I made a mix of some of my favourite songs from this blog, you can download it here and listen after the tracklist.

Women - Heat Distraction
The new Women record Public Strain is incredibly good, I'm listening to it a couple of times a day and it keeps growing. It has this indirect beauty, like they want to give the clue of the songs as late as possible.
I'm going to see them live again in September, I think the vinyl is out then and I'm definitely gonna buy it, the sleeve is great. Listen to 'Heat Distraction' below.

No Joy - No Summer 7"
No Joy are from Los Angeles and Montreal. 'No Summer' is a great noisy popsong that sounds like Sonic Youth and the usual shoegaze bands, but they blend these influences into their own sound, the way labelmates Weekend and Deerhunter do.
This debut 7" is out now, go to Mexican Summer.

Dirty Projectors & Björk - Mount Wittenberg Orca
Probably not the most original record to blog about today, but I've been listening a lot to this the past few weeks. Björk and Dirty Projectors previewed these songs last year in New York with David Byrne and M.I.A. in the audience, the video's were on youtube. It's a fascinating combination and Björk is not dominant at all on these tracks.
Below three of the six songs. You can buy the download here.

These New Puritans - 2008 WOXY Session
An old session from TNP recorded right after the release of Beat Pyramid. They play 'Swords Of Truth', 'Infinity Ytinifni', Elvis-bside 'fff', 'En Papier' and 'Elvis'. The mp3 is still available from the WOXY site.
I saw them live a few weeks ago, a very good set with the bassist as the second drummer. Their second album Hidden is very good, the vinyl version is beautiful.

R.E.M. - Chronic Town EP
The first couple of R.E.M. records are super good, I've been listening to them for so long now that it's hard to hear them objectively. They are being remastered, Murmur and Reckoning were released last year and soon Fables Of The Reconstruction is out. I hope they will also remaster this first EP from 1982.

The Breeders - The Pod Demo's
Kim Deal was in the Pixies and Tanya Donelly was in Throwing Muses when they started writing songs together, they demoed them, sent them to 4AD and got immediately signed. Some of these songs ended up on the first record Pod, 'You Always Hang Around' became 'Divine Hammer' on Last Splash and this beautiful version of 'Silver' was later recorded for Doolittle. 'Rave On' and 'Overcome' were never properly recorded.
These demo's sound super sweet, the songs became more sharp on Pod. The quality is not so good, but I think it adds more charm.
You can get the mp3's from No Aloha here.
