Veronica Falls @ Paradiso London Calling Amsterdam 11-11-11

Yesterday Veronica Falls were far out the best band on the London Calling festival here in Amsterdam. Perfect songs, perfect guitars and even more perfect drums. I was in front with my head on the stage listening to the great set, I hope they come back soon.

Electricity In Our Homes - Aching, Breaking, Shaking For You

I didn't listen to EIOH's new single that much, but since today I'm addicted.
It was released last month on O Genesis, the label from Tim Burgess.

Veronica Falls - The Box

Veronica Falls' debut album is on repeat here, what a nice record! The intro of this song sounds a bit like Pixies but then it takes a different route.

Veronica Falls - Right Side of My Brain

I love this record, I was looking forward to it and now it's here today. Since 2009 Veronica Falls have released a handful of excellent singles that are all here. My favourite b-side 'Stephen' is on it as well. Below 'Right Side Of My Brain'.

Hatcham Social - Like An Animal (Video)

Electrelane - On Parade (Black Cab Session)

It's great that Electrelane are sort of back from their hiatus. I love them and they should make music. In this Black Cab Session they play an acoustic version of my favourite Electrelane track. The original is more post-punky than this version but the skeleton remains with the little shouts.

Blue On Blue - Paradise Syndrome

Blue On Blue release their first self-titled EP in October on Tip Top Records. It's great, the songs are much slower than before, it's quite a dark record. Listen to 'Paradyse Syndrome' below.

The Victorian English Gentlemens Club - AA Single

The new double A side single from TVEGC is out August 22. It has the two most straightforward tracks from their new record Bag of Meat. You have to listen to that one. It's shit weather here in Amsterdam and I have a shit lovelife so I play Bag of Meat every day really loud and it seems to work. Listen to the single below and get the CD here.

The Victorian English Gentlemens Club - Lost My Face In A Fast Car Race

Bag of Meat is a masterpiece. I was very much looking forward to it. There are so many records that do nothing to me lately, so it's very welcome. It also comes at the right moment, there's a lot going on and I need a record with this amount of personality now. It kind of makes me nervous, I want to listen to all the songs at the same time, like this track 'Lost My Face In A Fast Car Race' is so striking and different I can't grasp it immediately.
The VEGC are definitely my favourite band. They have to release this on vinyl soon, I need it this summer.

50 Foot Wave - Nobody's Tar, Nobody's Feathers

This is a new track from 50 Foot Wave's new EP. It's free here: http://50footwave.cashmusic.org/
It's out for a couple of weeks and I just listened to it once, but this weekend it's on repeat. It's the strongest track yet, the tempo changes are super cool.

Warpaint - Baby (Live at Paradiso Amsterdam 19-6-11)

Warpaint were amazing yesterday night in the Paradiso, for the encore Emily played this song solo and the whole crowd was silent, quite special.

Crystal Stilts - Shake The Shackles (Video)

I saw Crystal Stilts last week, it was a very cool gig. I missed them the last time they were playing and I always regret that. Their second record In Love With Oblivion is played here everyday, it's going to be one of my favourites this year for sure.
Below the new video for 'Shake the Shackles', the first single from that record released last year.

John Maus - Head For The Country

The new John Maus record is great, I woke up very well with it today. 'Quantum Leap' and 'Believer' are here, below 'Head For The Country'.

Weekend - End Times 7"

'End Times' is Weekend's new single from last year's Sports LP. This track was released by Transparent before on a split 7" with Young Prisms. The new Slumberland 7" has a remix of 'Coma Summer' on the flipside.
Lately I'm listening a lot again to this beautiful noise record. 'End Times' and 'Youth Haunts' are still my favourite songs, but I'm also quite a fan of 'Monongah, WV'.

Telepathe - Throw Away This

Finally Telepathe return with new music. I love their debut album Dance Mother, this track is more straightforward and reminds me of Ladytron. The single will be out soon and is backed with a track called 'Destroyer'. Go to Stereogum for the mp3.

Hatcham Social - Crocodile

Forest Swords - Kaibasa Claps / Trust Your Blood

Forest Swords released my favourite record of last year, I still listen to Dagger Paths a lot. No Pain In Pop reissue his demo CD-R on vinyl on June 20th. The demo's from the Fjree Feather EP are remastered, they have a much wider sound now. The 12" comes on white vinyl and the download is available now, go here.
There's much more Forest Swords here.

Wild Beasts - Burning / Deeper

I took some time to listen to the new Wild Beasts album, slowly it grew a bit and I started to like it. But today I played Two Dancers again, and it's much better. I miss the guitars the most I think. There are two tracks that I really like, 'Deeper' and 'Burning', they are below.

No Joy - Indigo Child (Stereolab Remix)

This Stereolab remix comes to me as surprise. I love No Joy's debut album and obviously I love Stereolab a lot, but them together I would never expect. It's also good that this proves that Stereolab is still alive.

Panda Bear - Slow Motion

I always love Animal Collective, especially live they're very good. I liked Panda Bear's solo stuff but I never listened to it a lot. His last album Tomboy slowly crept into my head and now I play it every day. This track 'Slow Motion' is great.

Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - Glasgow Jubilee

Aidan Moffat is one of my heroes, I love his sarcastic lyrics. This collaboration with Bill Wells was just released. The video for the perfect single 'If You Keep Me In Your Heart' is here and the whole album is streaming here for a couple of weeks. Below 'Glasgow Jubilee'.

Friday, May 6, 2011

Salad - Shepherd's Isle

Salad's debut album Drink Me from 1995 was one of my favourite records of that year. They were influenced by Blondie and The Breeders. Mark Freegard, who produced Last Splash, produced Drink Me which you can hear in the strange and funny details.

Life Without Buildings - Is Is & The IRS

'Is Is & The IRS' is one of Life Without Building's best songs. It's not included on their first and only LP Any Other City, but it did appear on a live LP released a couple of years ago.
