Salad's debut album Drink Me from 1995 was one of my favourite records of that year. They were influenced by Blondie and The Breeders. Mark Freegard, who produced Last Splash, produced Drink Me which you can hear in the strange and funny details.
The 2nd single from Ice Cream, again four cool b-sides. After this Salad recorded a couple of demo's, got dropped by the label and split up. Marijne van der Vlugt then formed Cowboy Racer but I think she records radio jingles now and when I call a friend and I get his voicemail, I'm sure it's her telling me to leave a message.
This is the first single off Salad's second LP Ice Cream from 1997. It has four really nice b-sides. 'Cardboy King' is about a guy who puts adds from prostitues in telephone booths and visits them in turn afterwards.
Salad released I Want You in 1996, between their great debut Drink Me and second and final album Ice Cream. Most songs on this EP are great and it's strange that only 'A Size More Woman Than Her' ended up on Ice Cream. My favourite is the lesbian ballad 'One In The Bag'.
After 'Your Ma' Salad recorded their debut with Mark Freegard as well. The photo's are by Martin Parr. I love this one a lot. Very good songs, very good ideas. Spikey guitar pop influenced by The Breeders and Blondie.
Salad's fourth single was produced by Mark Freegard who also produced The Breeders' Last Splash. They called it a triple A-side because they thought all the songs were equally good.
Cool collection of Salad's first three singles. A lot of good ideas. 'Diminished Clothes' and 'On a Leash' are especially good. The singer Marijne van der Vlugt was a VJ on MTV in the 90's. She got the job when she went to MTV to bring her band's video and they asked her to audition. She got tired of being asked about MTV in the end. But they played the video for 'On a Leash' a lot.
