This is a beautiful Dutch documentary from 2002. I remember seeing it on TV, it really impressed me. Especially Kim singing the song 'Off You'. Title TK had just been released and I think it was hugely underrated, it's such a cool record.
Kim Deal was in the Pixies and Tanya Donelly was in Throwing Muses when they started writing songs together, they demoed them, sent them to 4AD and got immediately signed. Some of these songs ended up on the first record Pod, 'You Always Hang Around' became 'Divine Hammer' on Last Splash and this beautiful version of 'Silver' was later recorded for Doolittle. 'Rave On' and 'Overcome' were never properly recorded. These demo's sound super sweet, the songs became more sharp on Pod. The quality is not so good, but I think it adds more charm. You can get the mp3's from No Aloha here.
Last year The Breeders released this EP for the ATP festival. They silkscreened the sleeves themselves and sold it through their website.
The title track is a good Breeders rocker, 'The Last Time' has Mark Lanegan on vocals, which is a shame ofcourse. 'Pinnacle Hollow' is Kim Deal minimalism, but the nicest track here is 'Chances Are', a Bob Marley cover. Kelley Deal directed the video for 'Fate To Fatal'. Fate To Fatal mp3.
AfterLast SplashKimDealstarteda'new'band, The Amps. They recorded their only LP with a walkman and Steve Albini. The label pressed lots of copies because they thought it was going to be as big as Last Splash. Sadly it didn't. Now second hand shops always have a copy of Pacer and if you come across one, buy it. It's a supercool record.
'Breaking The Split Screen Barrier' has an ultra cool intro, 'Bragging Party' is one of Kim's finest songs and Divine Hammer b-side 'Hoverin' gets a make-over.
The Tipp City EP has two nice b-sides. 'Just Like A Briar' is a short punky song and there's a 'basement' demo that Kim recorded herself.
This is probably my favourite song ever. Funeral material. The drums are pefect, Kim's vocals are dreamy and sharp and the guitars get strange in the end. I love it how things start and stop all the time in this song. There are different components shifting over eachother, then stopping and coming in again. When I put it on, I always have to listen to it a couple of times in a row, it's super addictive.
This line-up of The Breeders here is also special, Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses is still there, Kelley Deal joined, Josephine Wiggs and the drummer is Britt Walford from Slint.
